Telemedicine Bridges Hope to Remote Refugee Settlements in Uganda

June 10, 2025

Our Work

In Uganda’s sprawling refugee settlements—such as Bidi Bidi, Nakivale, and Kyangwali—thousands of families face immense challenges in accessing even the most basic healthcare. Distance, a shortage of medical staff, and the everyday uncertainty of life in exile create tremendous barriers to health and hope. But with the rise of digital health, things are changing—fast.

RHCPI’s Telemedicine brings world-class health expertise to where it’s needed most—in real time. Using secure mobile devices and solar-powered connectivity, frontline community health workers in these settlements can now instantly reach out to experienced doctors and specialists many miles away.

How Telemedicine Saves Lives

Every day, RHCPI-trained health champions go hut-to-hut, identifying children with infections, providing maternal care, and screening for chronic conditions. When a case needs urgent advice, they can launch a video consultation or transmit a patient’s vitals and symptoms to the RHCPI virtual care team—even from deep inside settlements like Bidi Bidi or Kiryandongo. For more on how telemedicine operates in complex settings, see WHO’s Telemedicine Guidance.

Tangible Impacts: More Than Just Technology

The telemedicine program didn’t just arrive; it was co-designed with the refugee communities. RHCPI partnered with settlement leaders, local health committees, and young tech champions to ensure the solution truly meets local needs. Training is “hands on,” translation support is always available, and cultural sensitivity is at the heart of RHCPI’s work. Learn more about digital health partnerships in Uganda via UNICEF’s review.

“We feel respected and listened to,” says Amina, a community health champion in Nakivale. “Now, our people receive care with dignity—even from far away.”

What's Next?

RHCPI’s vision is to scale this program across more settlements, add mental health and specialist paediatric services, and empower more local leaders as digital health ambassadors.
